Remember the other day when I posted about making big marshmallows with Dylan? Well, yesterday, we went back outside to play since it was almost 30º. I thought the snow would be good for making another snow creature, but alas, it wasn't. Instead, Dylan had me make snowballs for him to squish. Then, I noticed we'd left 2 big marshmallows unsquished from the other day. I pointed Dylan in their direction. They were really hard and little man really really wanted to squish them. It was quite funny. See what I mean?
Going in for the sit and squish.
Okay, I'm sitting, but its not squishing.
I guess I should try harder....oops...I slid off.
My bottom didn't work...maybe I should lay on it.
Maybe if I breakdance a little it will help. (Yep, his legs are in the air!)
Nope, that didn't work either. Oh well, guess I'll just carve in it.
Last week, we were fortunate enough to have snowman-making snow. Here in Alaska, it's pretty rare to have that kind of snow until it starts really warming up (above 30º). We had an above 30º day last week (the first since December) and when I tried to make a snowball, it actually worked. Which was fantastic news, because my little guy has been wanting to make a Snow Bunny. Just like on Max and Ruby. He's been drawing them and making them out of play foam and play dough, and finally, we could make one out of snow.
This was actually my very first time making a snow creature all by myself. If you know me, you know I'm from Georgia and the biggest snowman I've made on my own was about 1 foot high. My friends and I made one in college, and Denny and I made one in Japan. We made two in the front yard here in Alaska, although Denny did most of that. So, the Snow Bunny was my first official creation. Dylan had fun "helping" me roll up the big snowballs. And he insisted on lifting up and adding the middle section of the Snow Bunny (before I was through rolling it...it's a little smaller than I would have made it, but that's okay, cause I love when Dylan wants to help. We had to make 3 heads before I figured out that using sticks to support the ears would be an excellent idea. I found buttons and a pinecone in my craft stash to give him eyes and a nose and a nice thick stick for arms. Dylan goes and checks out he Snow Bunny every time we walk out back to go to the garage.
Dylan loves to lay in the snow.
Yesterday was warm enough to play outside again, and Dylan really wanted to make another Snow Bunny. When I told him that the snow wasn't the right kind of snow and that we couldn't, he said "mommy to take the snow bunny apart". The best I could do was to pull the arms out and let him put them back in over and over again, until Denny distracted him with extra big "snow marshmallows" (Dylan dubbed these creations marshmallows when he was almost 2 back in Ohio...I used yogurt containers and small buckets back then). Denny used our trug buckets to make the extra large marshmallows which Dylan then enjoyed sitting on to squish (the smaller ones he stomps on).
Denny and Dylan fill up a trug bucket with snow.
Dylan wanted to carry the bucket.
Whoa, that's kinda heavy.
Time for the sit.....
....and SQUISH!
Then, Denny grabbed the sled and we headed off for a walk around the neighborhood. Upon seeing a big bank of snow on the side of the road, Dylan stuck a leg out of the sled. When Denny stopped, Dylan got out of the sled and clambored up the snow bank. Then, he asked for the sled. He was ready to go! The snow bank was really steep and Dylan loved it. Luckily for me, there was no hill to climb back up.....Denny just picked up Dylan in the sled, stuck him back on top and pulled him down again. Dylan thought this was great fun and (of course) wanted to do it over and over and over again.
We managed to get him to ride in the sled towards home and made several more snow bank stops for hill sledding. We even used the big snow bank in front of our house...and Denny added a really fun spin at the end. We love our giggling little snow bunny.
Dylan getting lifted up in his sled. Look at that happy smile.
Ready to SLED!

Here he is on the snowbank in front of our house. Time for a sled and spin!
