movies

After watching a certain movie yesterday, I have to pose a question. Is it harder to like a movie if you don't like any characters in a movie? We watched Bad Santa yesterday, and both of us sat there with the deer in headlights expressions on our faces and kept watching hoping something good would happen. Are we getting "too old" for shock value type movies? Is it because we want kids (and like kids) that this movie offended us in some ways? It's odd, because usually, not much offends, and we like shock value (love south park and dave chappelle...oh...and team america). But we just didnt' like this movie. We didn't identify with any of the characters, and didn't like or care about any of them. Is this what made us not like it? Or was it the fact that the lead character was a drunk, sex-addict, mean, thief of a mall santa claus? Or that the movie just plain sucked?!? I personally am voting for the last explanation. We have classified Bad Santa as a "Wing Commander" (another movie we went to see that really blew. Denny had higher hopes for it than I did...but...still blew).

On the way opposite end of the spectrum, we watched The Notebook last night. It was a beautiful (albeit sweet and sappy) movie that we both loved. One of the wonderful things about my husband is that he will watch any movie with me. He doesn't believe in the whole "chick flick" genre. For instance, we went to see Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants on Friday night, and he was the only guy in the theatre. And he loved the movie. *sigh*, what a fabulous fellow I have.
