I'm catching up on my blogging and realized I never did a post about the cakes I made for Dylan's birthday party back in October.
I made two cakes, one was a smaller rhinoceros cake for Dylan. And the other was a large jungle cake so that we'd have plenty of cake for the party. Both of them took some construction, and of course, for me that's the fun part.

Step one for the Rhinoceros cake was making a template on wax paper. I cut that out and then used it to cut out the cake in the shape of a rhinoceros.

I used the extra scraps of cake to build up the rhinoceros a little bit. I added some depth to him by giving him a little belly and other curves on the surface.

Here is the rhinoceros cake right before frosting.

And here is the finished cake.
The larger cake ended up using some of the rhinoceros cake scraps to build up the landscape.

I made an extra large sheet cake and cut off the tip to create the back part of the waterfall. I used scraps from the rhinoceros cake to build up around the waterfall area and create "rocks".

The finished waterfall cake. I wish I'd taken more photos of this one in progress, but, I was running out of time before the party. I had lots of fun creating the scene, and the little plastic animals and trees were a nice touch to finish it off.
